Placings for the women’s semi-finals came down to the final games of the regular season at Huia Pool, Lower Hutt over the weekend.
In the last game before finals, Hutt Heat’s Kate Enoka scored two goals in the final quarter to take the home side to penalties against Marist Magic, who had already gathered two wins over the weekend to launch to a potential second on the table.
In the first penalty shoot-out of the women’s competition, Hutt Heat goalkeeper Gabby Crothall was instrumental and blocked three shots to give her team the win. Conferring to the points table, Hutt Heat still ended up bottom of the table with 11 points, only earning two points with a win in penalties – had they won in regular time, the would have been placed second. Marist Magic, however, took that spot, earning seven points over the weekend including the important one point in their penalties loss to push them ahead of North Harbour on the table.
Waitakere Blue Diamonds ended the regular season as minor championship winners, earning six wins and three losses (North Harbour 2, Marist Magic), their strength in the opening weekend proving pivotal.
It all comes down to Saturday’s NZWPNL finals in Auckland where the Blue Diamonds will take on Hutt Heat, followed by Marist Magic against North Harbour.
